On Wednesday, November 13th, the 2024 ARCS Atlanta Scholar Awards Celebration (SAC) showcased the best of scientific scholarship in the beautiful ballroom of the Piedmont Driving Club. The 2024 SAC was a networking reception and light lunch at which members, donors, and guests chatted informally with the scholars. All scholars exhibited poster displays and guests were eager to learn about the scholars' research.
ARCS Atlanta President Carolynn Cooper welcomed the scholars, guests and our 2024 presenting sponsor Roche Diagnostics. A scholar representing each of our schools spoke briefly after which Morehouse President Dr. David Thomas spoke to donors and scholars thanking them for focusing on science.
In 2024, ARCS Atlanta gave awards to 53 scholars in many different science disciplines from Emory, Georgia Tech, Morehouse, and UGA.
Thanks from Alum Collette Miller, Postdoctoral Fellow at US Environmental Protection Agency
"Thank you all for reaching out and the support over the years. It's been a rocky few years following the passing of my doctoral research mentor a few weeks prior to my dissertation defense. Trying to rebound from his loss, finishing my dissertation, and figuring out where to go from there was challenging to say the least ... Thank you again for your support. Honestly I did not know how much I would have ended up relying on the generous gift that the Atlanta Chapter of ARCS Foundation provided when it was first received. However, it was vital in helping me launch a new chapter in my career when I found my plans collapse when my mentor passed. Again, THANK YOU!"
Thanks from Scholar Kevin Yehl
"I was very fortunate to be selected as one of this year's ARCS scholars... I plan to pursue an academic career in chemistry... Your support will allow me to continue my biomedical research in developing novel strateigies to treat drug resistant cancers and cardiovascular diseases... Again, thank you so much for your support of the sciences and post graduate education, both of which are very important in keeping America competitive..."
Thanks from Scholar Kira Newman
"I can only begin to express how grateful I am for the freedom to pursue an independent line of research without having to worry about how I will pay for the necessary lab supplies or training. This award is allowing me to answer broader and more valuable questions than I had previously thought possible... Thank you so much for your kindness, generosity, and belief in my potential as a scientist."
